What it is

Laser hair removal is a treatment that directs targeted laser light onto the skin, where it is absorbed by the pigment in the hair to reduce regrowth over a course of sessions.

Laser hair removal works by directing laser light at the hair follicle, where the pigment in the hair absorbs the energy. This targets the follicle to reduce future growth, treated as a course rather than a single session because hair grows in cycles and the laser is most effective on active follicles.

At Shookra the treatment uses the Quanta Duetto system, which combines Alexandrite and Nd:YAG laser wavelengths. Pairing the two wavelengths lets the clinician target hair on a range of skin types, including darker and more sensitive skin, and treat areas including the face, arms, legs, back and more sensitive regions such as the underarms and bikini line.

Settings are selected for your skin and hair at consultation rather than applied to a fixed formula. Your clinician accounts for factors such as skin tone, hair colour and recent sun exposure, and adjusts the device to keep treatment both effective and comfortable.

Who it's for

Laser hair removal suits anyone tired of the upkeep of shaving and waxing, or troubled by ingrown hairs, frequent regrowth and the irritation that traditional methods can leave behind. It can be used on the face and body, and on thicker, coarser growth as well as finer hair.

Because the Quanta Duetto pairs two wavelengths, treatment can be matched to a range of skin types, including deeper tones and more sensitive areas such as the underarms and bikini line. Results depend on your hair and skin, so your clinician confirms suitability, sets realistic expectations and reviews any recent sun exposure or medications at consultation.

  • Unwanted facial and body hair
  • Ingrown hairs and post-shaving bumps
  • Thick, coarse hair growth
  • Irritation from shaving and waxing
  • Hair on a range of skin types and tones

Who it’s not for

A few situations mean it’s better to wait, or to choose a different treatment:

  • Recent sun exposure, sunburn or a fresh tan on the treatment area
  • Pregnancy
  • An active skin infection, broken skin or cold sore in the treatment area
  • Photosensitising medication, or certain skin and hair types your clinician will assess at consultation

This isn’t exhaustive, and none of it rules you out on its own — your clinician confirms suitability at consultation.

What to expect

  1. 01

    Assessment & patch test

Your skin and hair type are assessed and the device matched to them. A patch test is carried out before a full session so your clinician can confirm the right settings and check how your skin responds.

  2. 02

    The session

The area is cleansed and the laser applied in passes across the treatment area. You may feel a brief warmth or a light snapping sensation with each pulse; sessions are quick and most people return to their day straight afterwards.

  3. 03

    Course & aftercare

Hair is treated as a course of sessions, spaced to follow the growth cycle. Afterwards you'll be advised to avoid sun exposure and to use broad-spectrum SPF on treated skin, with full aftercare guidance for the days that follow.

Physician note

On Laser Hair Removal

The honest conversation with laser is about expectations and a course, not a single visit. Because hair grows in cycles, we plan a series of sessions and aim for lasting reduction rather than promising permanence — most patients keep a small amount of maintenance over time. In our climate I'm particularly careful about recent sun exposure and tanning before treatment, and I match the device settings to each patient's skin tone so we keep results safe across a range of skin types.

Questions

01How does laser hair removal work?
Laser light is directed at the skin, where the pigment in the hair absorbs it and the energy targets the follicle to reduce future growth. Because hair grows in cycles, it is treated as a course of sessions rather than in one visit.
02How many sessions will I need, and is it permanent?
Most people need a course of several sessions, spaced to follow the hair growth cycle, with the exact number depending on the area, your hair and your skin. The realistic goal is long-term hair reduction rather than guaranteed permanent removal — many patients keep some light maintenance over time. Your clinician sets out a plan and realistic expectations at consultation.
03Is laser hair removal suitable for darker or sensitive skin?
The Quanta Duetto pairs Alexandrite and Nd:YAG wavelengths so treatment can be matched to a range of skin types, including deeper tones and sensitive areas. A patch test and consultation confirm the right settings for your skin before a full session.
04Does it hurt, and is there any downtime?
Most people feel a brief warmth or a light snapping sensation with each pulse. The area may look slightly pink for a short time afterwards, but there is generally no downtime and you can return to your day. Your clinician gives you aftercare guidance, including sun protection.
05How should I prepare for a session?
You'll usually be asked to shave the area beforehand rather than wax or pluck, and to avoid sun exposure, tanning and self-tan in the run-up. Tell your clinician about any medications, as some can affect suitability. Your specific pre-care is confirmed at consultation.
06What does Laser Hair Removal cost at Shookra?
Pricing depends on the area treated and the course your skin and hair need. Message us on WhatsApp and the team will share current pricing and help you book.
