What Are Dermal Fillers?
Dermal fillers are injectable gels — usually hyaluronic acid, a substance found naturally in skin — placed beneath the surface to restore or refine volume and contour in areas such as the cheeks, lips and jawline.
Dermal fillers gently restore lost volume, smooth fine lines and redefine facial contours, enhancing your natural beauty rather than altering it. They use premium-quality hyaluronic acid — a compound naturally present in your skin — so the gel integrates seamlessly into your tissues for a subtle result that keeps your expression your own.
Treatment is administered using fine microinjection techniques, with each session tailored to your facial anatomy and the outcome you’re after. Common areas include the cheeks, lips, nasolabial folds, jawline and chin, as well as under-eye hollows and the hands. The filler, the volume placed and the depth of injection are all chosen for the area and your features, rather than applied to a fixed formula.
At Shookra, fillers are carried out under doctor-led clinical protocols. Your clinician assesses your face, discusses what’s realistic for the area, and works toward a refined result that complements your features. Many people see an immediate improvement, with the skin looking plumper and more hydrated.

What Do Dermal Fillers Treat?
Dermal fillers are gels — most commonly hyaluronic acid, a substance the body produces naturally — placed into specific planes of the face to restore volume, rebuild structure or refine a contour. Different formulations have different thicknesses and lifting capacities, so the product is selected for the job: a firmer gel deep on the cheekbone for structural support, a softer one placed superficially in the lip.
They address loss and flattening rather than movement. Common areas are cheeks and midface volume, nasolabial folds, chin and jawline definition, under-eye hollowing, and the lips. Where the concern is a line created by muscle movement rather than lost volume, anti-wrinkle injections are the right tool, and the two are often planned together.
Where the aim is skin quality rather than shape — hydration, fine texture, light reflectance — skin boosters do that job instead. They are frequently confused with fillers and are not interchangeable.
Who Are Dermal Fillers For?
Dermal fillers can help with volume loss in the cheeks, nasolabial folds and marionette lines, under-eye hollows, and areas you’d like to define or enhance — lips, jawline, chin and the back of the hands. They suit people looking to restore softness that’s been lost over time, or to refine a feature subtly rather than dramatically.
Because the filler and the amount placed are adjustable, treatment can be kept conservative or built up gradually across sessions. Your clinician confirms suitability and the right plan at consultation, and will review your goals, medical history and any medications first.
- Volume loss in the cheeks
- Nasolabial folds and marionette lines
- Under-eye hollows
- Lip enhancement and definition
- Jawline and chin contouring
- Loss of facial freshness and glow
Who it’s not for
A few situations mean it’s better to wait, or to choose a different treatment:
- An active skin infection, inflammation or broken skin at the injection site
- Pregnancy or breastfeeding
- Known hypersensitivity to hyaluronic acid or filler components
- A bleeding disorder or use of blood-thinning medication
This isn’t exhaustive, and none of it rules you out on its own — your clinician confirms suitability at consultation.
Lip Fillers in Dubai: What to Know Before You Book
Lips are the most requested filler area and the least forgiving, so it is worth separating what the treatment does from what social media suggests it does. Placement, product choice and restraint matter more here than anywhere else on the face.
| What lip filler does well | What it should not be used for | |
|---|---|---|
| Goal | Restoring definition, correcting asymmetry, subtle hydration and shape. | Chasing a dramatic size increase in one session. |
| Product | A softer gel chosen for lip tissue, placed conservatively. | A firm structural gel intended for cheek or jaw support. |
| Approach | Building gradually across sessions, reviewed as it settles. | Maximum volume immediately, before swelling has resolved. |
| First 48 hours | Swelling is expected and is not the result — judge at two weeks. | Adding more because it 'looks small' while still swollen. |
| If you dislike it | Hyaluronic acid fillers can usually be dissolved by your physician. | Assuming it is permanent — it is not, which is a real safeguard. |
What to Expect from Dermal Fillers
- 01
Consult & plan
Your face is assessed, your goals discussed and the treatment areas agreed. Your clinician explains what's realistic, then maps a plan tailored to your facial anatomy.
- 02
Treat & refine
The filler is placed using fine microinjection techniques, area by area. You may feel brief pinching or pressure — your clinician works gradually and checks balance as they go to keep the result natural.
- 03
Review & aftercare
You'll see an immediate change once treatment is complete. Mild swelling or small bruises can settle over the following days, and you'll receive aftercare guidance plus a review to confirm you're happy with the result.
How Long Do Dermal Fillers Last?
Fillers are visible immediately, but the immediate result is not the final one. Swelling and occasional bruising are normal for the first few days, the result settles over about two weeks, and longevity commonly runs from six to eighteen months depending on the product, the area and your metabolism. Mobile areas such as the lips generally break the product down faster than structural areas such as the cheekbone. Results vary between individuals.
- Days 1–3
- Swelling, and sometimes bruising, particularly in the lips. This is expected and is not what the result will look like.
- Around 2 weeks
- Settled, and the right point to review. Any refinement is added here — building gradually is safer than over-filling on day one.
- 6–18 months
- Gradual breakdown. Lips and other mobile areas tend to be at the shorter end; deeper structural placement lasts longer.
- If you want it gone
- Hyaluronic acid fillers can usually be dissolved by a physician, which is a genuine safety margin and a reason to prefer them.

On Dermal Fillers
The aim with fillers is balance, not volume for its own sake. I prefer to treat conservatively and build over a couple of sessions where needed, assessing the face as a whole rather than one feature in isolation. Hyaluronic acid is also reversible, which gives us a useful safety margin — so we can adjust if your features change or your preference does. Good placement and restraint are what keep a result looking like you.
