What Is Cryolipolysis?
Cryolipolysis is a non-invasive fat-reduction treatment that uses controlled cooling to target and reduce a localised pocket of fat. The cooled fat cells break down gradually and are cleared by the body over the following weeks.
At Shookra, our cryolipolysis treatments use controlled cooling technology to target unwanted fat cells without surgery or downtime. The applicator cools a precise area of fat to the point where those cells break down and are then cleared naturally by the body over the following weeks.
It is suited to resistant fat in defined areas such as the abdomen, flanks, thighs, upper arms and under the chin — pockets that hold on despite a steady diet and regular exercise. Because the treatment works on a localised area rather than the whole body, it is used to refine and contour a specific region rather than to lose weight overall.
Each session is carried out under doctor-led clinical protocols. Your clinician assesses the area, confirms whether cryolipolysis is the right approach for what you want to change, and plans the number of cycles and sessions accordingly. Results build gradually as the body processes the treated cells.

What Does Cryolipolysis Treat?
Cryolipolysis — commonly called fat freezing — cools a defined pocket of fat to a temperature that damages fat cells while leaving skin and surrounding tissue intact. Fat responds to cold differently from other tissue because of its lipid structure, and the damaged cells are then cleared gradually by the body over the following weeks and months.
It is a contouring treatment for localised, pinchable fat in people already near a stable weight — abdomen, flanks, thighs and similar discrete pockets. It is not a weight-loss treatment, it does not address visceral fat, and it will not tighten loose skin. Where laxity rather than fat volume is the real issue, a tightening technology does more, and where the goal is genuine weight reduction that is a medical pathway rather than a contouring one.
Suitability is the honest gate. The applicator needs to draw the fat layer in, so firm, non-compressible fullness responds poorly, and certain cold-related medical conditions rule the treatment out entirely. That is established at consultation before anything is booked.
Who Is Cryolipolysis For?
Cryolipolysis suits people who are close to their target shape but hold a defined pocket of fat that does not respond to diet and exercise — commonly the lower abdomen, the flanks or “love handles”, the thighs, the upper arms, or a fuller area under the chin. It is also a considered option for refining uneven fat distribution after pregnancy.
It is a contouring treatment, not a weight-loss method, and works best when overall weight is stable. Your clinician confirms suitability at consultation, checks the area is appropriate for cooling, and reviews your medical history before recommending a plan.
- Localised, diet-resistant fat pockets
- Abdominal and flank fullness
- Thigh and inner-thigh fat
- Uneven or post-pregnancy fat distribution
- Loss of definition and contour
- Sluggish lymphatic clearance in the area
Who it’s not for
A few situations mean it’s better to wait, or to choose a different treatment:
- Pregnancy or breastfeeding
- Cold-related conditions such as cryoglobulinaemia, cold urticaria or paroxysmal cold haemoglobinuria, where exposure to cold can trigger a reaction
- A hernia in or near the treatment area
- Looking to lose weight overall — cryolipolysis contours a localised pocket and is not a weight-loss treatment
This isn’t exhaustive, and none of it rules you out on its own — your clinician confirms suitability at consultation.
Cryolipolysis vs Cavitation: Which Suits the Area?
Both reduce localised fat without surgery, and the right one depends on the shape of the area rather than on which is newer. Cavitation and cryolipolysis are often used in the same plan for different zones.
| Cryolipolysis | Cavitation | |
|---|---|---|
| How it works | Controlled cooling damages fat cells, which the body then clears. | Ultrasound disrupts fat cell walls; contents are cleared via the lymphatic system. |
| Best-shaped area | Discrete, pinchable pockets the applicator can draw in. | Broader, flatter zones that an applicator cannot grasp. |
| Sensation | Intense cold and a pulling sensation for the first few minutes, then numbness. | Warmth and vibration; generally comfortable throughout. |
| Sessions | Often one or two per area, reviewed at three months. | Usually a short course spaced over weeks. |
| Afterwards | Redness, numbness or tenderness for a few days is common. | Little to no after-effect; normal activity immediately. |
What to Expect from Cryolipolysis
- 01
Consult & plan
Your clinician evaluates the area and your body-contouring goals, confirms suitability, and personalises a plan — the cycles, applicator and number of sessions the area is likely to need.
- 02
Targeted cooling
The applicator is positioned over the pocket of fat and delivers controlled cooling to that area. You may feel an intense cold and a pulling or pressure sensation at first, which usually settles as the area becomes numb.
- 03
Natural clearance & review
Over the following weeks the cooled fat cells break down and are processed by the body, so results build gradually. Your clinician reviews progress and confirms whether a further session would help refine the result.
Cryolipolysis Results: How Long They Take
Cryolipolysis is slow by mechanism, and any clinic implying otherwise is overselling. Early change is commonly noticeable from around four to six weeks, with the fuller result assessed at about three months once the body has cleared the treated cells. Treated fat cells do not return, but the remaining ones can still expand if weight rises — so the result holds in proportion to a stable weight afterwards. Results vary between individuals.
- First few days
- Redness, numbness, tingling or tenderness in the treated area is common and settles on its own.
- Weeks 4–6
- Early contour change for most people. Measurements and standardised photos are far more reliable than the mirror at this stage.
- Around 3 months
- The point at which the result is properly assessed and any second session for the area is planned.
- Afterwards
- Held with a stable weight. This is contouring, not weight management — the two are maintained differently.

On Cryolipolysis
The honest conversation I have at consultation is about what cooling can and cannot do. Cryolipolysis is for a specific pocket of fat that has not shifted with diet and training — it refines a shape, it does not replace weight loss. I am careful to set realistic expectations on how much one area can change and how long the result takes to appear, because the body clears the treated cells gradually over weeks. Choosing the right candidate and the right applicator for the area is what makes the difference between a subtle, even result and a disappointing one.
