What Is Sclerotherapy?
Sclerotherapy is a treatment in which a solution is injected directly into a spider vein or smaller varicose vein. The solution irritates the vein lining so the vessel closes, and blood reroutes through healthier veins nearby.
A fine needle is used to inject a sclerosant solution into the vein. The solution irritates the lining of the vessel, which causes it to close. Over the following weeks the closed vein is gradually absorbed by the body and blood reroutes through healthier veins.
It suits surface veins — spider and thread veins, and smaller varicose veins. Where an assessment finds an underlying problem with the deeper veins, treating only the surface is not the right sequence, and your specialist will explain what is.
Treated veins do not come back, but sclerotherapy does not stop new veins forming later, and it is not a cure for the tendency to develop them. Anyone promising permanent results is going beyond what the treatment does.
Who Is Sclerotherapy For?
It is generally considered for visible spider or thread veins on the legs, and for smaller varicose veins, in people who have been assessed and found suitable.
Suitability, and how many sessions might be involved, are decided after examination and any ultrasound your specialist requests. Both vary considerably between people, which is why neither is quoted before you are seen.

Who it’s not for
A few situations mean it’s better to wait, or to choose a different treatment:
- Pregnancy or breastfeeding
- A current or previous blood clot (DVT), or a known clotting disorder
- Active infection, or a skin condition affecting the area to be treated
- Known allergy to the sclerosant solution
- Limited mobility, since walking afterwards is part of the aftercare

Consultation & assessment
A specialist examines your legs and, where indicated, requests an ultrasound to check the deeper veins before anything is planned. That order matters: the surface is treated once what is underneath is understood.

The session
The solution is injected into the mapped veins through a very fine needle. Most people describe a brief stinging or cramping sensation rather than sharp pain.

Compression & walking
Compression stockings are usually worn afterwards for a period your specialist sets, and walking is encouraged. You are given written aftercare on the day.
