What Are Anti-Wrinkle Injections?

Anti-wrinkle injections are small doses of botulinum toxin placed into specific facial muscles to temporarily relax them. By easing the repeated movement that creates expression lines, they soften wrinkles such as frown lines, forehead lines and crow’s feet.

Anti-wrinkle injections use botulinum toxin — often known by brand names such as Botox — to relax the specific muscles responsible for expression lines. When a muscle moves less, the skin over it creases less, and the lines that form with frowning, raising the brows or squinting gradually soften.

The most commonly treated areas are the frown lines between the brows, horizontal forehead lines and crow’s feet at the corners of the eyes. The dose and the precise injection points are chosen for your facial anatomy and the way you move, rather than applied to a fixed pattern — the aim is to relax movement, not to erase it.

At Shookra, treatment is carried out under doctor-led clinical protocols. Your clinician assesses your muscle strength and how your face moves at rest and in expression, then plans placement to keep the result balanced and natural — so you still look like yourself, just less tired and less lined.

What Do Anti-Wrinkle Injections Treat?

Anti-wrinkle injections use botulinum toxin type A — the active commonly known by brand names such as Botox — placed in small, measured doses into specific facial muscles. Relaxing those muscles eases the repeated movement that creates expression lines, so the lines soften as the skin above them stops being folded.

That mechanism defines what it can and cannot do. It works on dynamiclines — the ones that appear or deepen when you move: frown lines between the brows, horizontal forehead lines, and crow’s feet at the outer eyes. It has far less effect on static lines that are visible at rest, and none at all on volume loss. Where the concern is hollowing or lost contour rather than movement, dermal fillers do a different job, and the two are frequently used together.

Beyond expression lines, the same active is used medically for conditions such as excessive sweating and jaw clenching. Whether any of it is appropriate for you is a clinical decision made at consultation, not a menu choice.

Who Are Anti-Wrinkle Injections For?

Anti-wrinkle injections suit people who want to soften the lines that come from years of expression — frown lines that read as tension, forehead lines, or crow’s feet at the corners of the eyes. They work best on dynamic lines, the ones that deepen when you move, and can also be used preventively to ease lines before they set.

Because the dose and placement are adjustable, treatment can be kept light for a first session or a softer look, or planned more fully for established lines. Your clinician confirms suitability at consultation, and will review your medical history, any medications and your goals before treating.

  • Frown lines between the brows
  • Horizontal forehead lines
  • Crow's feet around the eyes
  • A tired or tense resting expression
  • Early, preventive line softening

Who it’s not for

A few situations mean it’s better to wait, or to choose a different treatment:

  • Pregnancy or breastfeeding
  • Certain neuromuscular conditions, such as myasthenia gravis
  • Active skin infection or inflammation at the intended injection sites
  • A known allergy to botulinum toxin or any ingredient in the product

This isn’t exhaustive, and none of it rules you out on its own — your clinician confirms suitability at consultation.

Anti-Wrinkle Injections vs Dermal Fillers: Which Do You Need?

This is the most common confusion in aesthetic medicine, and getting it wrong is why some results look off. They are different substances doing different jobs, and plenty of treatment plans use both.

What to Expect from Anti-Wrinkle Injections

  1. 01

    Consult & plan

Your clinician reviews your medical history and assesses how your face moves at rest and in expression. Together you agree the areas to treat and the look you want, and the injection points are mapped to your anatomy.

  2. 02

    Inject

The skin is cleansed and small doses are placed into the target muscles using a fine needle. Most people describe a brief pinch or sting. The treatment itself usually takes around 10 to 15 minutes.

  3. 03

    Settle & review

You can return to most daily activities straight away, following simple aftercare. The effect develops gradually over the following days, and your clinician can review the result and fine-tune at a follow-up.

06

How Long Do Anti-Wrinkle Injections Last?

Anti-wrinkle injections are not immediate, which surprises people who expect a filler-like result. Onset is typically noticeable from around day three, with the full effect at about two weeks, and the effect commonly lasting three to four months before movement gradually returns. Longevity varies with dose, the area treated, your muscle strength and metabolism. Results vary between individuals, and we do not promise a fixed duration.

Days 1–2
Small raised marks at the injection points settle within an hour or so. Occasional light bruising. No visible change to lines yet.
Days 3–7
Onset — movement in the treated muscles begins to soften. This is the point at which people first notice it.
Around 2 weeks
Full effect, and the right moment for a review. Any small adjustment is made here rather than earlier.
Months 3–4
Movement gradually returns. Most people plan their next treatment around this point rather than waiting for full return.

On Anti-Wrinkle Injections

The aim with anti-wrinkle injections is restraint, not freezing. I read how each face moves before I treat and place conservative doses where they soften tension while leaving natural expression intact — you should still be able to frown and smile. For most patients I prefer to start measured and review the result, since it is always easier to add a little than to wait out too much. Treated well, the effect is subtle: people tend to look less tired rather than obviously treated.

Anti-Wrinkle Injection Questions

01Do anti-wrinkle injections hurt?
Most people find them very tolerable. The needle is fine and the injections are quick, so the usual sensation is a brief pinch or sting at each point. No anaesthetic is normally needed, and any discomfort settles within moments.
02When will I see results, and how long do they last?
The effect builds gradually over the days after treatment as the muscle relaxes, with the full result usually visible within about two weeks. Results are temporary and typically last in the region of three to four months before movement returns and a top-up is considered. Your clinician will confirm what to expect for you.
03Will my face still look natural?
That is the goal. Treatment is planned to relax movement, not remove it, so expression stays your own — you should still be able to frown and smile. Dose and placement are kept conservative and reviewed, which is what keeps the result subtle rather than frozen.
04Is there any downtime?
Downtime is minimal and most people return to normal activities the same day. You may have small temporary marks or mild redness at the injection points. Your clinician will give you simple aftercare, which usually includes avoiding rubbing the area, strenuous exercise and lying flat for a short period afterwards.
05Are anti-wrinkle injections safe?
Botulinum toxin has a long record of clinical use when administered by a trained, licensed clinician. At Shookra it is carried out under doctor-led protocols, after a medical review to confirm it is right for you. Your clinician will discuss the benefits, the temporary nature of the result and any risks at consultation.
06What do anti-wrinkle injections cost at Shookra?
Pricing depends on the areas treated and the plan your face needs. Message us on WhatsApp and the team will share current pricing and help you book.
07Is this the same as Botox?
Botox is a brand name for botulinum toxin type A, which is the active used in anti-wrinkle injections. Several licensed brands of that active exist and we select the appropriate product clinically rather than advertising by brand. So yes — when people say Botox, this is the treatment they mean.
08How long do anti-wrinkle injections last?
Commonly three to four months, after which movement gradually returns. Longevity depends on the dose, the area, your muscle strength and your metabolism — stronger muscles and faster metabolisms tend to see it wear off sooner. Results vary between individuals and no duration can be guaranteed.
09How long do they take to work?
Onset is typically from around day three, with the full effect at about two weeks. It is deliberately gradual, which is part of why it looks natural. We review at two weeks and make any small adjustment then rather than earlier, because judging the result before that point is misleading.
010Will I still be able to make expressions?
Yes, when it is dosed properly. The aim is softened lines with your expressions intact, not a frozen face — that look comes from over-treatment. Our default is conservative dosing with a review at two weeks, because adding a little more is straightforward and removing it is not.
011Does it hurt?
Minimally. The needles are very fine and the injections are quick — most people describe a brief sting. No anaesthetic is usually needed. Small raised marks at the injection points settle within about an hour, and occasional light bruising is possible.
012Which areas can be treated?
Most commonly frown lines between the brows, horizontal forehead lines and crow's feet at the outer eyes — the dynamic lines created by movement. Other areas are treated where clinically appropriate. What suits you depends on your anatomy and how your muscles move, which is what the assessment establishes.
