What it is

IHHT (Intermittent Hypoxia–Hyperoxia Therapy) is a non-invasive, in-clinic longevity protocol in which a person breathes air with alternating low- and high-oxygen concentrations through a mask while resting, under medical supervision.

During an IHHT session you sit or recline comfortably and breathe through a mask connected to a device that adjusts the oxygen content of the air. The protocol alternates between intervals of reduced-oxygen (hypoxic) air and intervals of oxygen-enriched (hyperoxic) air, controlled by the system and monitored throughout by your clinician.

Because it cycles between thinner, altitude-like air and oxygen-rich air, IHHT is sometimes described as a passive form of altitude conditioning: the body is exposed to the kind of intermittent low-oxygen stimulus associated with high altitude without any physical exertion and without leaving the clinic. The intended aim is to apply a controlled, repeated breathing stimulus that the body adapts to over a course of sessions.

Oxygen saturation and other readings are tracked continuously, and the balance of intervals is set to your assessment so the session stays within a comfortable, supervised range.

Who it's for

IHHT is generally chosen by people interested in longevity and recovery who prefer a passive, non-invasive option — often to support everyday energy and stamina, recovery around training, or stress resilience and rest quality, as a measured addition to a wider longevity plan.

IHHT is not suitable for everyone. Certain heart, lung and pregnancy considerations mean a clinician confirms suitability before any session, and the protocol is adjusted — or not recommended — based on that review.

  • Everyday energy and stamina
  • Recovery around training
  • Stress resilience and rest quality
  • Cardiovascular and oxygen conditioning
  • Focus and cognitive performance

Who it’s not for

A few situations mean it’s better to wait, or to choose a different treatment:

  • Pregnancy
  • Uncontrolled cardiovascular conditions or a recent cardiac event
  • Uncontrolled or severe respiratory conditions
  • Acute illness or active infection

This isn’t exhaustive, and none of it rules you out on its own — your clinician confirms suitability at consultation.

What to expect

  1. 01

    Assessment & baseline

A clinician reviews your history and suitability, takes baseline readings such as oxygen saturation, and explains the protocol before you begin.

  2. 02

    Supervised session

You rest while breathing through the mask. The device cycles between low- and high-oxygen air across the session, with your readings monitored throughout.

  3. 03

    After & cadence

There is no downtime, so you can return to your day. Your clinician advises whether a single session or a planned course suits your goals.

Physician note

On IHHT

I treat IHHT as a supervised, supportive option rather than a standalone fix — the value is in the structure and the monitoring. For most people it works best as part of a wider longevity plan, run as a planned course rather than a single session, with readings reviewed each time so we adjust the intervals to how the body is responding. We screen carefully beforehand, and if it is not appropriate for you I will say so.

Questions

01What is IHHT?
IHHT stands for Intermittent Hypoxia–Hyperoxia Therapy. You breathe air with alternating low- and high-oxygen concentrations through a mask while resting, under medical supervision. It is non-invasive, with no injections.
02Is IHHT the same as altitude training?
It is often described as a passive form of altitude conditioning, because it exposes you to intermittent low-oxygen air similar to high altitude. Unlike altitude training, it requires no physical exertion and is done while resting in the clinic.
03What does a session feel like?
You sit or recline and breathe normally through a mask. Most people find it calm and undemanding. Your oxygen levels and other readings are monitored throughout, and the settings are kept within a comfortable, supervised range.
04Is IHHT suitable for me?
Not everyone is a candidate. Certain heart, lung and pregnancy considerations need review first, so a DHA-licensed clinician confirms suitability before any session and adjusts or declines the protocol accordingly.
05Is there any downtime?
No. IHHT is non-invasive, so you can return to your usual activities straight away after a session.
06What does IHHT cost at Shookra?
Pricing depends on whether you have a single session or a planned course, and on your assessment. Message us on WhatsApp and the team will share current pricing and help you book.
